I’ve been reading advice for companies to survive in tough times. One recommendation is for the President or CEO to approve all invoices. Maybe the author of that suggestion has a specific example in mind, but I challenge that suggestion as a way to improved for these reasons:

If a company does not have a culture [...]

A Japanese company is selling the Obama action figure, and these photos only hint at what this guy can do. Given that Obama is now capable of fighting Darth Vader, curing the world if its ails – I caution against putting too many expectations, and some unrealistic ones at that, on one individual. We will [...]

I realize this seems obvious, but I’ll relate this story. I attended a seminar advising women-owned, start-up companies. One woman spoke of her business idea involving an application she intended to license to companies working with housebound seniors. Her application allowed the adult children to leave personal voice messages that could be sent at specified [...]

I hate these images of shuttered businesses, and unfortunately they are becoming increasingly common with the economy. Businesses close for numerous reasons, but an explanation not frequently used, or admitted to, is that the business became obsolete.

A business risks obsolescence when its owners fail to follow advances or trends in their industry, understand their competition [...]

My first company was MFS Network Technologies. I loved that firm, they did so many things right from an employee’s perspective. MFSNT was a telecom construction company with offices around the world. We experienced constant churn as projects started, finished and advanced. Management struggled with the question of promoting worthy candidates for success on future [...]

Congratulations! You elected to survey your customers. I bet you ask – how satisfied are you with us? I suspect you are patting yourself on the back with the responses. Don’t strain your arm. This post is by no means an endorsement as I have not used this product but I thought Rypple was a great idea http://www.rypple.com/index.shtml.
Some employees crave regular feedback. I found this scenario true with younger, greener employees who are striving to acclimate to life out of school or a new business culture. Also NetGeners [...]

I recieve regular emails from the Natural Resources Defense Council http://www.savebiogems.org/ as I have a vested interest in my environment and I like being informed of the issues.
This organization has its act together. They want public support in the forms of emails sent on their behalf to politicians and leading public figures. [...]

When I was a project manager in Washington, DC I had three guys join my project and became my core management, as my business manager, engineering management and construction manager. They were from New Orleans, Miami (via New York, and considered himself Cuban) and a first generation American whose family hailed from India. I loved [...]
